We teach the wrong things: the years and the mind we could give back.
Part five of a series. Every piece so far has been about doing the same education more fairly and efficiently. This one asks a harder question: what if a great deal of what we teach is the wrong thing — and what we most need to teach, we don't teach at all?
A student spends years, and roughly half their daily mental energy, mastering subjects at a depth they will never use — while the capacities that actually decide how a life goes are never taught at all. The problem isn't only wasted time. It's that we teach the wrong things.
The deepest failure: the most important subjects are simply absent
School fills years with drilled, forgettable detail, and skips the things that transfer to everything, for a whole life: how to think clearly — reasoning, weighing evidence, spotting a bad argument, catching your own bias. How to learn, so you can pick up any new skill in a world that keeps changing. How your own mind works — psychology, motivation, emotion, habit. How people work — empathy, cooperation, handling conflict. How to communicate — to write, speak, listen, be understood. How to decide under uncertainty. How to handle money and the practical machinery of a life. How to steady yourself through stress and failure.
A student leaves knowing the dates of battles and not how to think, decide, relate, or manage themselves. This absence is worse than any waste, because these are the capacities that determine how a whole life turns out — and they're precisely the ones school forgets.
Breadth at exam-depth crowds out mastery
We teach a dozen subjects all at testing depth, so a student skims every one and masters none. The time to go deep on anything isn't there, because it's spread thin across everything.
Much of that depth is never needed
Knowing what political science or history is — its shape, its basics — has real value. Being drilled and examined on it for years, when you will never use it again, mostly doesn't. There is a difference between understanding a field and being tested to exam depth in it, and we've forgotten it.
It drains time and about half the mind from what matters
A student has finite hours and a finite daily budget of focus, working memory, and stress-tolerance. On the order of forty to fifty percent of that cognitive capacity is consumed cramming and worrying over subjects they will never use. That's effort that could have gone into deep mastery of the core, or into the thinking-and-living subjects above. (That figure is illustrative — an order-of-magnitude claim about how much of a child's mental budget goes to low-value drilling, not a measured statistic.)
The same finite budget is drained in adults, too — by the commute, the second job, the months on a waiting list — which is why an overburdened adult learner arrives with even less of it to spend.
Exams turn understanding into pressure
When every subject carries homework and an exam, you don't learn it to understand it — you learn it to pass it, and forget it the week after. The pressure crowds out the curiosity that makes someone want to know a thing for its own sake.
More subjects means more failing — by simple arithmetic
Carry ten exam subjects instead of four, and the same finite effort is divided across more of them — so less goes into each, and the chance of failing rises in every one at once. It isn't only that more subjects give more opportunities to fail; it's that spreading thin actively lowers performance in each. And each failure teaches the wrong lesson: a child who falls behind in a subject they never needed doesn't conclude "that subject wasn't for me" — they quietly decide they're not clever, and carry it for life.
The solution: fewer things, mastered — and the right things, finally taught
What follows is a reasoned proposal, not a measured result. Every step would have to be proven.
Above all, teach the subjects that build a mind and a life. With the reclaimed time and the recovered forty-to-fifty percent of cognitive capacity, the single highest-leverage thing to add is the cluster school forgot: clear thinking, how to learn, psychology, human behaviour, communication, decision-making, money, resilience. These compound across every job, every relationship, every decision — a far bigger prize than a slightly deeper grasp of any single subject. (Recorded expert teaching handles the frameworks and knowledge here — logic, psychology basics, communication technique, financial literacy — while the judgement parts lean on discussion and the human in the room. No grader marks "wisdom.")
Make the broad subjects light. Keep breadth, but lighten it: history, politics, moral reasoning, the sciences you won't specialise in become a one-hour video every week or two — ten to twenty lectures in total, no homework, no exam. You learn them for the sake of understanding, not passing. The load lifts, the curiosity survives, and you still come out knowing what these fields are.
Aim the recovered mind at the core. The freed hours and the recovered cognitive capacity pour into the subjects that compound — maths, science, technology, computing, language — learned to real mastery. The student now masters fewer subjects with roughly double the mental resources.
Less homework gives back time and energy — for deeper work, for the life-skills subjects, and for rest and play, which is itself part of learning well.
Fewer exams means fewer failures, and better results. Two effects at once: fewer subjects means fewer chances to fail and be labelled; and concentrated effort means more goes into each remaining subject, so students perform better on the exams that stay. Passing rates rise; the "not clever" verdict falls.
And it gives years back. Concentrated time and mind, plus recorded teaching and instant feedback doing the heavy lifting, means the core is mastered faster than it's skimmed today. Depending on when a subject is introduced, a motivated student can reach working competence in one to two years and genuine expertise in three to four — where the current system, which must first train teachers, takes a decade. A student could reach roughly degree-level competence in the core by sixteen to eighteen, begin specialising at sixteen, super-specialise at eighteen with industry involved, and be genuinely job-ready by around twenty — two to five years earlier than today's path produces someone of equal, and often shallower, capability. Which subjects, at what depth and age, remains the education authority's choice; the model creates the room to choose, it doesn't pre-write the curriculum.
What it comes to
We currently spend a child's most irreplaceable years — and roughly half their mind — buying coverage of the wrong things, half of it forgotten by the next week, while the capacities that actually decide a life go untaught. The reform spends those same years and that same effort on mastery plus a mind for living: the core deep, the broad light and pressure-free, clear thinking and human understanding finally on the timetable, more children passing, and years handed back at the end.
Not less education. Education that finally teaches the right things.
